POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Position Title:  English Language Learner Lead Teacher 
  • School/Department:  Designated School
  • Supervisor:  Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of English Language Learners and Academic Intervention 
  • Terms of Employment:  Per Collective Bargaining Agreement including an additional stipend to fulfill additional items related to the role of a lead ELL teacher

Primary Function:

 

The English Language Learner (ELL) Lead teacher provides English language development instruction to children who are acquiring English as an additional language, working collaboratively with other instructional personnel as a resource. The lead teacher is responsible for being the representative for matters related to English Language Learners in the building providing guidance, support, and compliance as needed.  

This position will meet requirements with state and federal regulations. 

 

Essential Duties:

  • Recognize the basic dignities of students, parents and families, colleagues, and subordinates.
  • Exercise due care to protect the mental and physical safety of students.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom environment that promotes students’ academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Plan daily instruction consistent with current ELL standards and content taught in general education environments related to language instruction
  • Plan and implement a variety of instructional activities to stimulate the process of language learning and acquisition as well as content-area learning
  • Communicate with classroom teachers about academic progress, appropriate accommodations, student behavior, and testing
  • Demonstrate interest and concern in students and parents through notes, phone contact, or home visits. 
  • Administers and oversees the WIDA ACCESS and WIDA screening tests to Limited English Proficient students (LEP) and collaborate with the student testing coordinators
  • Utilize progress monitoring data to plan and organize instruction leading to student growth
  • Supports paraprofessional instruction and lesson plans
  • WIDA certification to the relevant ELL student population 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

 

Lead Teacher role includes additional responsibilities:

  • Attends IEP or behavioral meetings for LEP students of service
  • Coordinate and implement WIDA with the Director of English Language Learners and Academic Intervention 
  • Collaboratively working with other intervention staff and administration to implement and coordinate paraprofessional schedules and instruction
  • Coordinate translation services for parents of ELL students
  • Organizes and attends an ELL Parent Informational Night Annually
  • Supporting determination of placements for newly enrolled students
  • Oversees records of ELL student enrollments in data systems, school records including Home Language Surveys (HLS), Individual Learning Plans (ILP’s), Parent Notifications, or other required documentation

  • The education and educator license or permit required by the Indiana Department of Education

Working Conditions:

 

The duties of this position are performed in a classroom environment.  Persons are required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch.  Additionally, persons may need to lift objects up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, and depth perception.  Noise levels in the working environments may be moderately loud or loud.  Occasionally, persons are required to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.  Persons are also required to maintain emotional composure under stress.
