POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Position Title:  Bus Monitor
  • School/Department:  Transportation
  • Supervisor:  Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation
  • Terms of Employment:  Per Classified Conditions of Employment

Primary Function:

 

To monitor and support students' needs while they ride the bus and when they load and unload at their assigned bus stops.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Recognize the basic dignities of students, parents and families, colleagues, and subordinates.
  • Exercise due care to protect the mental and physical safety of students.
  • Direct and assist students to ensure they load and unload the bus safely at their assigned bus stops.
  • Monitor students while they ride the bus.
  • Collaborate with the bus driver in the management of student behavior expectations and procedures.

Essential Qualifications and Characteristics:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Some prior experience working directly with students is preferred
  • A positive, people-centered, and solution-focused attitude towards duties and students, staff, and others
  • The ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with others
  • Effective communication skills
  • The ability to use various computer and technology resources
  • A past record clear of criminal activity and child abuse or neglect

Working Conditions:

 

The duties of this position are performed primarily on a school bus.  Persons are required to monitor and support students' needs on a school bus.  Occasionally, persons are required to stand, walk, and communicate and direct students on a school bus.  Persons are also required to assist students when loading onto and unloading from the school bus, which may require persons to lift and move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, and depth perception.  Noise levels in the working environment may be moderately loud or loud.  Persons are also required to maintain emotional composure under stress.
