POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Position Title: Custodian
- School/Department: Designated School
- Supervisor: Director of Facilities and Assistant Director of Facilities

Primary Function:
To maintain assigned buildings and resources so that the environments are clean, orderly, and safe.
Essential Duties:
- If scheduled, open and close assigned buildings and ensure all doors and windows are locked and resources are secured at close.
- Dust, sweep and vacuum, and mop, offices, classrooms, hallways, and all other assigned areas and resources.
- Mop and disinfect restrooms, water fountains, and other assigned areas or resources.
- Remove and dispose of trash.
- Wash interior and exterior windows as needed.
- Monitor and regulate heating and air conditioning.
- Keep assigned areas free of litter or clutter.
- Mow, trim, and maintain grass, shrubs, and other plants in assigned areas as needed.
- Remove snow, ice, and other debris from sidewalks and other assigned areas as needed.
- Assist in the preparation for special activities and events.
- Respond and tend to accidents and other unforseen events that require clean up, general repair, or other custodial or maintenance service.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing light bulbs, replacing filters, stocking supplies, painting, plumbing, and wiring.
- Monitor and report to supervisors when areas or resources are in need of repair.
- Monitor and report any hazards or concerns that pose a threat to students, staff, and others.
- Adhere to all regulations regarding cleaning products, cleaning methods, storage of materials, and the care for and disposal of supplies and trash.
- Participate in summer cleaning and maintenance of assigned areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Characteristics:
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Some prior experience in a custodial and maintenance position is preferred
- A positive, people-centered, and solution-focused attitude towards duties and students, staff, and others
- The ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with others
- Effective communication skills
- The ability to adhere to required safety expectations and procedures
- The ability to operate necessary equipment and tools such as vacuum cleaners, floor cleaners or scrubbers, and lawn mowers and other outdoor equipment
- The ability to use a variety of cleaning products as regulated
- The ability to lift and manipulate objects up to 50 pounds
- The ability to climb a ladder and repair or replace ceiling tiles and light bulbs
- A willingness to tend to unforseen events
- The ability to identify and problem solve custodial and maintenance-related issues
- A willingness to work flexible hours and overtime as needed
- The ability to use various computer and technology resources
- A past record clear of criminal activity and child abuse or neglect
Working Conditions:
The duties of this position are performed in an educational environment. Persons are required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, twist, and lift and manipulate objects up to 50 pounds without restrictions up to 125 pounds. Persons are required to use hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate tools and controls, reach objects above the head with arms and hands, climb ladders, push and pull equipment, and move furniture. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, and depth perception. Noise levels in the working environments may be moderately loud or loud. Occasionally, persons are required to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
